Do Traditional Business Owners Really Need to Understand AI Automation?

Adan Sin - Adan Sin - 马来西亚传统生意人AI自动化指南

Many business owners my age react to words like “AI” and “automation” with resistance – thinking it’s a young person’s thing that has nothing to do with them.

I used to think the same way, until I actually learned it and realized I was wrong.

Automation Doesn’t Replace You – It Saves You Time

AI automation sounds like sci-fi, but when you break it down, it’s just taking the repetitive tasks you do every day and handing them over to a system.

Here’s a simple example: a customer messages you at 10pm asking about pricing, and you’re asleep. With a simple auto-reply system in place to respond and collect basic info, you wake up to a lead that’s already “half-formed” — not a cold message.

This isn’t about replacing your human conversations – it’s about turning ‘waiting time’ into ‘already following up’ time.

Don’t Try to Automate Everything at Once

I’ve seen too many people try to build a ‘fully automated money machine’ right out of the gate. They overcomplicate everything and end up achieving absolutely nothing.

My advice: start with one process. For example, automate just the “first response to customer inquiries.”

For example, just automate the ‘very first response’ to a customer inquiry. Once that’s locked in, you’ll feel the difference instantly – faster replies, fewer lost leads. Once that runs smoothly, then you move to the next step.

Age Isn’t the Problem – Mindset Is

I was 56 when I finally dove into this stuff. Honestly, at first, I felt completely left behind. I’d look at these 20- and 30-somethings talking about AI like it was second nature, while I was still trying to wrap my head around the absolute basics.

But once I actually got my hands dirty, I realised: the tools themselves aren’t the hard part. The real challenge is being willing to drop your ego, forget your age, and become a student all over again.

If you also come from a traditional business background and are hesitating to take this step – I want to tell you: it’s truly not too late.
